Challenge

SDA, Joint Venture between Lagardère Travel Retail and Aeroport de Paris Group launchs a Project for the chain of duty-free shops in airports around the globe.

The retail chain was encumbered with an overburdened, outdated intranet and relied on email for all internal operational messaging and requests. The existing solution left them unable to react quickly to market trends because all proposed changes and related communication had to go through slow, indirect channels. The outmoded intranet was also unable to connect all retail outlets onto a single platform. This meant that every manager was wasting time cycling through volleys of emails, while keeping up with changing priorities and requests, instead of working with a system that could streamline and automate process and communications. The company needed to create a way to better communicate internally while tracking and managing operational progress and information on sales/promotions, pricing, and employee requests from many international physical locations. We proposed a solution which has since been adopted by other companies facing similar challenges of retail operations management.

Solution

Adyax recommended an integrated, hybrid retail management and intranet solution to act as blended point of sale software and retail operations software.

The system allows for simultaneous requests and notifications to be processed from any employee from any global location, avoiding the sequential, non-collaborative nature (and delays) of dependency on email. The solution is delivered via a reimagined open source intranet, built on the Drupal platform for Aelia’s chain of duty-free shops.

Unique to this retail operations management solution, the intranet functions also as a powerful point of sale management system, or POS. The hybridization of intranet with POS allows for a smoother workflow and the POS is able to track changes in inventory and cost on both registers and iPads used throughout the retail chain. Messages and requests are migrated from email into a unified hub using network wide notifications, allowing requests, from managers and employees alike, to be processed in a consolidated ticketing system. The entirety of the project was built by our Drupal experts - from the initial architecture of the application to the launch and following technical support. Our business analysts and developers worked closely with the business stakeholders at Lagardere to assure that the new retail operations management solution would meet their needs, providing an improved user experience, introducing business efficiency, improving use of technology, and optimizing each store’s earnings potential.

Our goal was to make sure that the application was not only functional and optimized, but intuitive and attractive to end-users of varying technical or digital competence.

Not surprisingly, usability is a key consideration for the creation of a new retail intranet solution. The employee-facing system has to be intuitive and efficient to use so that every employee within a company can operate with ease, ensuring adoption and capturing benefits of efficiency. Keeping this in mind, we built a very user-friendly application.

Importantly, the retail portal is also built to allow for offline function as a failsafe, due to the unreliability of airport internet connections. If the system goes down, or if a user were to experience connectivity challenges, the user can continue to make inputs which are cached offline and immediately catch up once the connection is restored - ensuring no down time.

Benefits

Our hybrid intranet / POS retail operations management solution in and of itself introduced several immediate benefits, including ease of use, a central solution, improved business efficiencies, and improved retail operations management processes.

But furthermore, following the release of the new system, SDA & Lagardère Travel Retail experienced a digital transformation within their business that they were not excepting. It turns out that doing away with muddled email correspondence and replacing operational email communications with a ticketing system allows for improves communication and efficiency across the board. And better workflow allows for the main office to faster, reacting to the needs and opportunities of the global market to implement immediate changes by way of pricing, promotions, or discounts.

Daily administrative tasks are now completed 20 times faster. 20x

The hybrid Intranet / POS is able to track changes in inventory and cost on both registers and iOS devices. The effort put into localization and user-centric experience design paid off: all employees around the world are able to use the new application with minimal training and support. Additionally, the solution is cost efficient, costing far less than initial project predictions. Our work to use Drupal for a digital transformation solution guarantees increased business success and exceeded expectations.
